{"id":359,"date":"2025-09-13T20:23:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T00:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/behaviorbuffetllc.com\/?p=359"},"modified":"2025-09-13T20:23:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T00:23:43","slug":"rbt-interviews-its-a-two-way-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behaviorbuffetllc.com\/?p=359","title":{"rendered":"RBT Interviews: It&#8217;s a Two-Way Street"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If there&#8217;s one thing I&#8217;ve learned from being in the beautiful, challenging world of applied behavior analysis (ABA), it&#8217;s that the heart of this work isn&#8217;t perfectly intervention plan: it&#8217;s the people following the plan. This includes the registered behavior technicians (RBTs) who show up, day in and day out, to make a real difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 45%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>This is why when it comes to interviews, I&#8217;ve tossed out the standard script. Forget sitting under fluorescent lights reading through a standardized list of questions. I am just as invested in the potential hire deciding <em>my organization <\/em>is a the right fit for them as I am in the reverse. Because everyone deserves a workplace that values them, supports them, and aligns with their professional values. My job in this interview is to give a transparent look at who I am as a supervisor, my organizational culture, and how we practice. I encourage asking the tough questions; advocate for yourself! If something is important, such as scheduling, supervision style, or client populations, this is the time to bring it up. Their voice matters here, and it always will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>If we\u2019re not both walking away from that first call thinking, <em>\u201cYes, this is someone I want to work with,\u201d<\/em> then it\u2019s not the right fit, and that\u2019s okay.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beyond the Behavior: A Trauma-Assumed Approach<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re going to be a team, it\u2019s crucial you know\u00a0how I approach my clients. I am deeply committed to a\u00a0<strong>trauma-assumed care<\/strong>\u00a0model. Our job in those moments is not to only to increase skill acquisition but to provide safety and co-regulation. The learning can, and will, happen when the client is back in a state where they can access that learning.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We are still behavior analysts. We still believe in the power of reinforcement and the laws of behavior. AND we need to develop interventions that apply them with compassion, nuance, and a fundamental respect for the client\u2019s emotional experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the Phone? Ditching the Visual Bias<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill-element\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>You might have noticed I prefer phone interviews. There\u2019s a method to my madness! While video calls are great, they come with instant, and often unconscious, visual judgments. Relational frame theory is constantly at play, with or without our consent. It levels the playing field and lets connection happen through words first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, my goal isn\u2019t just to \u201cfill a position.\u201d It\u2019s to start a professional relationship built on mutual respect, open communication, and a shared commitment to compassionate, effective care.
